Most of a rocket’s mass is fuel it will burn on the way up

The Tsiolkovsky rocket equation shows that reaching a given velocity needs a propellant mass fraction that grows exponentially with the target delta-v — doubling the required velocity change can multiply the fuel needed several times over, not just double it.

Why it works

Δv = v_e × ln(m₀/m_f) means the ratio of starting mass to final mass matters exponentially, not linearly — it’s exactly why multi-stage rockets exist: dropping empty fuel tanks partway up avoids carrying their dead weight through the entire burn.
