Shoot the night sky

Dark sky, no moon, clear air and the right hour. Three tools decide whether tonight is worth carrying a tripod up a hill.

Find the actual dark window

Sunset is not darkness. Astronomical twilight — the sun 18° below the horizon — is when the sky stops glowing, and at high latitudes in summer it never arrives at all.

Nautical−12°
Astronomical−18°
Rule of thumbAbove about 60° latitude there is no astronomical darkness for weeks around midsummer. No amount of driving fixes it.

Check the moon before anything else

A bright moon washes out everything faint. The phase and its rise and set times matter more than cloud forecasts for deep-sky work — a clear night under a full moon is worse than a hazy one under a new moon.

Full moonwashes out faint objects
Also checkmoonrise and moonset times
Rule of thumbA first-quarter moon that sets before midnight gives you a usable second half of the night. Phase alone does not tell you that — timing does.

Get above the thick air

Half the atmosphere by mass sits below 5.5 km. Altitude buys transparency and darker skies — and takes oxygen away at the same time, which is worth knowing before a long night at 3,000 m.

At 3,000 m≈70% of sea-level pressure
Half the atmospherebelow 5.5 km
Rule of thumbPressure falls roughly 12% per 1,000 m near sea level. Oxygen stays 21% of the air the whole way up — there is just less air.

Dress for what it will actually feel like

Standing still on a summit at 3 a.m. with wind is a different proposition from the daytime forecast. Wind chill is the number that decides whether the night ends early.

Air2 °C
Wind25 km/h
Feels likewell below zero
Rule of thumbWind chill is about exposed skin, not air temperature. Below freezing with wind, the margin for standing still is small.

Four checks before you carry anything uphill

Darkness, moon, air and cold — in that order, because the first two decide whether it is worth going at all. Change the date and the whole plan moves.
